I dreamed of being a doctor as a young child, but actually becoming a cancer doctor was quite a long road.  When I was still in elementary school, I lost my grandfather and two young aunts. I felt the pain, anger and disbelief we all shared, especially my young cousins who lost their mothers. This would have been much easier to handle if we had a physician in our large family to guide us. Trying to become a doctor in China was difficult because in the past, colleges were shut down and all high school graduates were sent to the countryside for “re-education.”  Fortunately, that changed when I started middle school as China was opened to the outside world.  I still remember the day the Star Wars movie came out, everyone was in a kind of shock mixed with excitement.

During my surgical residency training after medical school, I developed a special interest in cancer.  I was involved in a research project investigating alternative routes of chemotherapy delivery.  The experience was valuable, but I realized the limitations of pursuing a career in China.   I came to the US as a graduate student to advance my knowledge about cancer and earned my PhD by studying gene expression regulation.  As satisfying as research was, I was not content with just seeing cancer cells killed in Petri dishes.  I wanted to take care of and cure cancer patients.  That realization led me to complete my training in Radiation Oncology and I have practiced in the field for nearly 15 years.  In the past 15-20 years since I started my residency, there has been tremendous progress in our field which makes radiation treatment more effective, safer and less toxic to patients.

As a member of HOA, I am very impressed by the cutting edge multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer, as well as the integrated team work from doctors, nurses, nutritionists, physical therapists, social workers and many others.  I consider it a privilege and honor to care for our patients here at HOA.
