The Importance of a Second Opinion on Prostate Cancer Treatment

Many patients are diagnosed with prostate cancer by their urologist. Most urologists are familiar with treating prostate cancer using surgery. If your physician's specialty is not prostate cancer treatment specifically, it is best to schedule a consultation with an oncologist before starting a treatment plan.

You might also consider getting a second opinion on what you should do. Men with prostate cancer usually have time to consider the best treatment options for them, as long as the cancer is the slow-growing type.

The oncologists at HOA often provide second opinions on diagnosis and treatment plans for prostate cancer. We want to ensure you are confident with your care. Take the time to evaluate your options and choose the cancer care team you feel most comfortable with. While most insurance plans cover second opinions, it is important to check your coverage before you see another oncologist.

Who is Part of Your Prostate Cancer Care Team?

It is best to consult an oncologist to determine the best prostate cancer treatment for you. You may be referred to a radiation oncologist, especially if the prostate cancer was detected in its early stages. Radiation therapy is often the main treatment or used in combination with surgery before considering other options.

However, if the cancer is found at a later stage or if it is clear that you will need systemic therapies like chemotherapy or immunotherapy, a medical oncologist will also join your care team. The radiation oncologist and medical oncologist will work together closely when deciding which treatments are necessary and the order in which they will be administered.

In addition to developing a personalized prostate cancer treatment plan, the HOA team will assist you with other important aspects of cancer care. This includes nutritional counseling, emotional support, side effect management, and more. Other members of your prostate cancer care team, such as oncology nurses, dietitians, social workers, and supportive care specialists, will provide these services.
