CyberKnife® Non-Invasive Radiosurgery

Non-Surgical Cyberknife® Technology

The CyberKnife®is the only FDA-approved, non-invasive, completely robotic, targeted radiation therapy system available in the world. And, our Brittonfield office is home to the only CyberKnife® system in a comprehensive cancer center in New York State outside of Manhattan and Long Island.

A patient who is not a good candidate for cancer surgery or simply wants a less invasive treatment option, should consider CyberKnife® treatment which we use to effectively treat prostate, lung and brain cancers.

HOA physicians invested in our first CyberKnife® system in 2007, to offer patients the most advanced cancer care close to home. Maintaining that commitment, we updated our system in 2018 to include the latest robotic M6 radiosurgery platform.

What is CyberKnife®?

CyberKnife® is a form of targeted radiation therapy known as SBRT, or stereotactic body radiation therapy. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, SBRT delivers radiation only to the cancerous tissue, sparing the healthy tissue around it. As a result, it can be administered in fewer sessions, with fewer side effects and higher success rates.

When compared to conventional radiation therapy, SBRT is much more effective. While traditional radiotherapy is effective about 50% of the time, SBRT is effective at controlling cancer more than 90% of the time.

CyberKnife® Benefits

Even when surgery is an option, it requires the removal of a margin of healthy tissue around the cancerous tissue. With the CyberKnife® system only cancerous tissue is removed from the body, sparing healthy tissue.

Patients treated with the CyberKnife® system also report that its unique motion management system reduces any stress about moving during the treatment, providing greater physical comfort. Patients are fully clothed, and do not have to worry about holding their breath, changing their position, coughing or other slight movements. The CyberKnife® system is the only device designed to accommodate all forms of patient and tumor motion, even while the treatment is being delivered.

Another benefit is that patients with previous radiation therapy can be retreated effectively. With Cyberknife® there are no lifetime limits as with conventional radiation therapy.
