Cancer care has many dimensions beyond the physical – emotional and spiritual, hope and fear, disappointment and celebration. In some ways, it is like any journey with different pathways to consider.
As part of our partnership with our patients, we offer a broad range of oncology social work services. Our staff social workers, Gussie Sorensen and Belinda Tamoutselis, provide individual, family, and group counseling; coordinates patient and family educational programs; and assists with making referrals to local and national community resources.
Our Patients and Families Support Grou p provides patients and their family members with the opportunity to meet with people who are in treatment, in remission, or considered cured. Support therapy breaks down the physical and emotional isolation that many patients experience.
Even though every patient’s situation is different, it’s the human bond that brings us together. From our own staff clinicians to hotlines across the country, experienced patient advocates help create and build a support network and an information network to provide direction along the journey.
As partners in care, we:
Recognize as a team the profound importance of a cancer diagnosis on our patients, their loved ones, and friends.
View patients holistically, and we provide clinicians to address the individual needs of our patients.
Welcome the opportunity to offer support and provide the psychosocial and spiritual treatments that will help maximize each patient’s outcome.
For patients and family members seeking additional information to aid them in their understanding of the many facets of cancer care and support, we offer a comprehensive resource library of educational videos as well as a variety of brochures and pamphlets. In addition, updated lists of cancer related websites and sources of cancer information and support at both the local and national level are available.
Our social work department works closely with other organizations to provide local educational and support programs, including Unique Connections, and I Can Cope
