Frequently Asked Radiation Questions

Am I going to lose my hair?

You may lose some hair in the area that is being treated. Hair usually grows back after treatment ends.

How long does the treatment last?

The treatment lasts about 1 to 1˝ minutes per treatment field. The length of time you may spend in the treatment room will be about 10 to 15 minutes. The course of treatment will last approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

Am I radioactive?

No matter how much radiation therapy you receive, you will never become radioactive. You have no radiation inside of you.

Can I be around other people while I am receiving treatment?

Yes. However, we do urge you to avoid people with colds or other infections. You may be more vulnerable to infections until you’ve completed your course of treatment.

How do you know how much radiation I need?

There have been many studies that show what dose gives the best results. The dose you receive is carefully determined by members of our radiation therapy team, including the radiation oncologist; the radiation physicist or dosimetrist, who helps design your treatment plan and the exact dosage of radiation you’ll need; and a radiation therapist, who delivers the prescribed treatment.
