Hematology - Oncology

Hematology is defined as the science concerned with blood and the blood forming tissues. Simplistically, peripheral blood or the blood that circulates in the human body is comprised of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, contain hemoglobin and are essential for the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the tissues in the body. White blood cells include those type of cells that constitute the main defense of the body against infection, antibody production, and the destruction of damaged tissue. Granulocytes, lymphocytes, and monocytes are among the cells that make up white blood cells.  Platelets or thrombocytes are important in blood coagulation or clotting.

Abnormalities or blood disorders can manifest in these blood cells and platelets. Anemia, for example, is a blood disorder that may exist as a result of an abnormality in the shape, size, oxygen carrying capacity, or other dysfunction of the red blood cell.

Our board certified Hematologists are highly skilled experts in this field and can offer a variety of treatment options.  Our physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical laboratory staff, and our entire healthcare team are committed to the highest level of care in the management of patients with blood disorders.

Oncology is defined at the branch of medicine dealing with tumors or cancer. Tumors are spontaneous growths of tissue that form an abnormal mass. Cancer is defined as the uncontrolled growth of cells that can spread from their site of origin to other organs and tissues of the body.  This unregulated, disorganized proliferation of cell growth may be stimulated by such events as exposure to environmental factors and genetic predisposition.  Diagnosis of cancer is made by various means, depending on the site of the body that is affected.

Our board certified medical oncologists maintain an outstanding expertise in the diagnosis and management of cancer. We focus on aspects of healing that include but are not limited to the conventional regimes of chemotherapy/infusion therapy, chemotherapeutic agents involved in clinical research trials, psychosocial therapy, nutritional counseling, and access to complimentary modalities.  In addition to our physician, advanced practice, research and clinical team, we augment care with an on site pharmacist, social worker, nutritionist and medical technologists.
