I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, where my dad was a mechanical engineer.  I followed my dad’s lead and went to NC State in engineering.  Later in grad school at RPI in biomedical engineering, I was involved in a project testing artificial joints in dogs.  I was more fascinated by the surgeries than the engineering aspects of the project and realized that engineering wasn’t for me.  I went back to North Carolina to go to medical school at UNC Chapel Hill.  I went to Duke for an internship and residency in Internal Medicine and then wound up going back to UNC for a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology.

At the end of my fellowship at UNC, my wife got a job teaching at Syracuse University.  Two of my attendings at UNC who had previously worked at Roswell Park and at Strong pointed me toward HOACNY.  They were impressed with the ongoing research activities through the CCOP and by the proactive stance taken in adapting to the future of Oncology.  I have been here since 1998 and have found HOA to be a very forward looking practice. The whole spirit of the place is outgoing without being provincial.  People genuinely like each other here, and that translates into better patient care.  The staff focuses on the patients, not on internal issues.  From the patients’ perspective, this is a well-run practice, the people are kind, the bureaucracy is minimzed, so their needs are met.  I believe that patients “vote with their feet” and we get so much referral business, I know we must be mostly doing it right.

My career as an Oncologist has changed me.  To me, people who come to HOA for treatment of cancer and blood disorders are people first, patients second.  They remind me to enjoy life, to try to take pleasure in every moment.  My wife, who is a professor of religion at Syracuse University, and I enjoy our two children.  We live in the city during the winter and get away to Cazenovia Lake in the summer.  Although my parental responsibilities take up most of my time outside of work, I like to garden and work on odd jobs around the house.  I’m trying to stay ahead of my kids in the kayak and the sailboat, but I know they’ll catch me soon.
